Last week we discussed the different relationships we have and we practiced replacing negative self-talk with more positive thoughts. If you missed it, I invite you to go back and read it.

Today let’s talk about respect. What does respect mean to you? What happens when you don’t get the respect you think you deserve? What about respect as it pertains to relationships?

My grandmother used to tell me, “If you want respect you have to earn it. Nobody is just going to give you respect.” She was a wise woman. She never had the opportunity to attend school, but she knew about life. However, I have come to realize that she missed something. While most people will not GIVE respect that is not earned, we can be different. We can start giving respect to everyone…even to people who have not earned it. This week, let’s give respect to everyone we meet, everyone we speak with on the phone, everyone at work and at home. Not everyone will reciprocate the same respect extended to them, and that is ok. This exercise is not about receiving, it’s about giving.

This will be a hard concept for some, but developing healthy, respectful relationships with others will make a difference in this world. As the saying goes, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

If you or your team would benefit from more personalized leadership development training, contact Legacy Consulting Services for a free lunch-n-learn. I encourage you to continue positive thinking and extend respect to others this week. Check back in next week for the conclusion of Relationships 101!
